I think we should mount some miniguns on a container ship or tanker, throw in a couple of missile launchers, and man it with US Navy personnel including a SEAL team or two. Go back and forth using the shipping lanes in question until the pirates decide to give it a try. After one bunch of pirates go for the bait and are taken care of, change ships or change the appearance of the bait ship, and do it all over again. Repeat until there are no pirates left or they decide that its not worth the risk.

I have a feeling that we will just go give them a hug or something though. That or make excuses for their behavior.

A couple of 20 mm cannons should take care of it. That would blow them out of the water before they got close. Take out five or six boatloads and it won't be so lucrative. Now, it's all gain with little risk.

The country is so chaotic that I don't see a typical military solution being feasible.

This hostage situation should have been over 3 days ago. A team of SEALS pops up over the gunwales of the lifeboat... Some popping noises, and no more asshole "pirates."

Not letting the company negotiate with the criminals... And the Secretary of State should be announcing a simple policy. You take US citizens... We smash you.

It's an enclosed lifeboat. They can't jump the gunwales. They've closed the hatches so they can't even use snipers to take them out.

In WWII, the British camoflauged some ships to look like cargo ships, and when the U-Boats surfaced to attack, the Brits blew them to hell. It worked then, it would work now.
