    Student Tased in Schoolyard Fight

GLENDALE A boy was tased during a fight at a Glendale middle school.

Police say two 14-year-olds were fighting over a football game on Tuesday afternoon. One of the boys was said to be considerably larger than the other.

After a school resource officers tried several times to break up the fight, he tased the larger boy. He reportedly said that was his last resort.

The boy who was tased was taken to the hospital by his father and will be okay. Both boys involved in the fight were suspended for five days.

An internal investigation will be made on the resource officer but he will not be placed on leave.

Police say the officer was distraught about having to tase a teen boy.
Officer tases teen at school to break up fight | LOCAL NEWS | Arizona | azfamily.com News reel story is at the link.

GLENDALE - An 8th grade student at Desert Sky Middle School in Glendale was Tased Tuesday during a playground scuffle with another student.

Police say the 14-year-old and another boy were involved in a fight, and when the school resource officer tried to break up the fight and couldn't, he pulled out his Taser.

The teens ignored an order to stop fighting from J. Collum, a 6-and-a-half veteran of the force, who was then forced to fire his Taser.

Police say the teen who was fired upon is about 6'1" and 145 lbs.

The paramedics were called, but the two boys were not injured. Assault and disorderly conduct charges are possible.

Sgt. Jim Cunningham with the Glendale Police said, "In this instance, the officer determined that this was the use of force he considered necessary."

An internal investigation will be launched into the officer's conduct to determine whether or not his use of force was justified.

That's pretty skinny for 6'1". Sometimes you just have to use a proverbial 2 x 4 to get some kids to listen these days. I hope this incident has no lasting effects on the SRO involved. Maybe the kid will listen to authority figures in the future.

My inside information is that he isn't actually a SRO. He was working an off-duty job, probably covering for the regular SRO. I've met him a couple times on calls, he seems like an ok guy from my limited contacts.

I've seen some big kids at 14, and 6-1 is nothing to sneeze at. I can't blame him.

Is he athletic? Did the officer try hands on and it didn't work? How fired up and angry is the guy? Do you want to pepper spray with a lot of innocent people, and children nearby? I'm 5-7 (and by far not the shortest on my department) and I'm not going toe to toe with someone that tall who has much better reach. How big was the officer? See how that goes?

I have no problems with the kid being tased. He needed to be brought into compliance since it appears other measures failed. Yes, he would have a longer reach as opposed to your 5'7". The kids anger only elevated the circumstances. Body size is always an issue and if one is lacking in one quality, other measures need to be taken to equal that. Especially if the aggressor is bigger than you.

There are lots of unknowns in this story. I guess we'll see what happens when IA is finished. It shouldn't take very long.

I think that depts. that have rules against tasing teens are stupid. It's cool that whoever this guy works for doesn't have such a rule. He only has to worry if the use was justified on the "person", not on the "teen." If the totality of the circumstances adds up to a justified tasing, then the suspect being a teen should not matter.

Sounds like a good call to me too. The alternatives are OC, baton, or bare hands. All of those risk just as much injury to the kid as the taser.

I find the whole incident simply shocking.

I rarley get hands on by myself when two idiots are fighting, just too many hands to watch and way to many bad things can happen. With kids these days, you don't want to get in the middle of something that will escalate past taser, so in the limited accounts I believe it was a good call on the officers' part.

From what the article says it seems justified to me. The kid didn't want to obey orders and kept going after the other...sounds like he needed a reality check.
