Guy tries to swim for it but it didn't work out too well!
LAKE GASTON — A mother and son await their day in court after the mother allegedly physically obstructed an officer attempting to arrest her son, who tried to make his getaway in the waters of Lake Gaston.
Eugene Bass | Daily Herald Halifax County Deputy Corey Griffin and Scott Coleman Wright wait for E.M.S. to check Wright out after his swim in the cold Lake Gaston water, before taking him to jail.
The serving of three subpoenas on shore ended with the arrest of a man in the water by Halifax County Sheriff’s deputies last Sunday.
The situation began when Deputy Corey Griffin served three subpoenas on property owner Patsy Ray at her boat dock on Cross Point Drive, in the Cross Cut subdivision on Lake Gaston.
The arrest report states as Deputy Griffin arrived, he saw Ray standing near her car and a male subject on the pier by the boathouse. Griffin thought the male to be Scott Wright, Ray’s son. Griffin also had an order for arrest for Scott Wright.
The police report says Griffin approached Ray and served her with the subpoenas. He then questioned Ray about the identity of the male subject who now appeared to be hiding in the boathouse.
Griffin advised Ray he had an order for arrest for Wright, then Ray admitted it was Wright.
When Griffin went to the pier he could not find Wright, who was then spotted in the water under the pier. Griffin talked Wright into coming ashore. When Griffin informed Wright of the arrest order, Wright told the officer he was not going to jail.
As Griffin reached for Wright to place him in handcuffs, Ray allegedly struck Griffin across the upper chest with her right arm and placed herself between Griffin and Wright, allowing Wright to run down the pier and jump into the lake again.
The sheriff’s report states Griffin immediately arrested Ray and placed her in his patrol car. He then attempted to talk Wright into coming out of the water. Wright swam to a power pole several hundred yards away in the middle of Lee’s Creek near the Lake Gaston Dam. Griffin then contacted Lt. Neil Aycock and advised him of the situation.
Aycock contacted Sgt. Carl Hatcher of N.C. Wildlife Enforcement Division to have a boat brought to the scene. Two more deputies arrived on scene. Deputies Joe Sealey and Griffin got on a private boat owned by Tom Evans, who offered to take the deputies out to where Wright was clinging to the power pole.
Upon arriving at the pole, the deputies attempted to talk Wright into climbing aboard the boat, but he refused. He also refused the personal floatation device the deputies offered him.
Once Hatcher arrived on the scene in his N.C. Wildlife boat, Sealey boarded the boat and the two were able to get Wright into the boat, where he was placed under arrest. Wright was returned to the pier where he was checked out by emergency medical personnel due to his time spent in the cold water. The arrest report states no one was injured.
Wright and Ray were placed in the Halifax County Jail with a May 19 court date. Ray was charged with resist, delay and obstruct an officer, and assault on a government official. Ray’s bond was set at $1,000. Wright was charged with resist, delay and obstruct an officer and for four failure to appear warrants served on him. Wright was placed under a $2,500 bond.I'm ready for spring!

Yeah, our wonderful magistrates at work. I just locked up a guy and charged him with 21 counts of B&E, 21 counts of larceny, 10 counts of possession of stolen property, 25 counts of damage to property, ficticious info, and RDO and only got a $10,000 bond and that was after I had to beg and plead and stand on my head and tell the magistrate that he was an asshole. Not to mention that the guy just got out of prison for the same stuff and has history that could stretch from here to California and back.I'm ready for spring!

Sounds about normal for the NC Magistrates system, just as I remember it."An Unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it." Jeff Cooper
