Child rapist gets 29 years

MEDINA — A Brunswick man was sentenced to 29 years in prison Monday for raping a 5-year-old girl in his tractor-trailer last year in Liverpool Township.
Brian Vitt, 27, of 3764 Foxwood Terrace, No. 311, pleaded guilty last month to one count of kidnapping and two counts of rape, all first-degree felonies.
During his sentencing hearing, Vitt admitted to the crimes and said he has a problem.
“Nothing I can say will bring back the child’s innocence,” said Vitt, sobbing. “My mom didn’t raise me like this.”
His attorney, Robert Glickman, said a psychological evaluation showed Vitt exhibits “distorted sexual impulses.”
Before sentencing, Common Pleas Judge Christopher J. Collier read Vitt’s statement to police, which said the victim somehow initially encouraged him.
“It strains credulity that a 5-year-old was running the show,” Collier said.
Court records show Vitt took the girl for a ride in his truck on Nov. 15 and assaulted her twice in the bunk area.
This incident was not the first time Vitt was arrested last year; in July, he allegedly tried to transport child pornography across the Canadian border. As a condition of his bond, he was not supposed to have contact with any children younger than age 12.
Upon his release from prison, Vitt will have to register as a sex offender every 90 days for the rest of his life. He remained in the Medina County Jail on Monday.
