The Scoop: Sacramento County Weapons Permits
R.E. Graswich
COMMENTARY (CBS13) ― Budget cuts could mean fewer Sacramento County deputies on the street. And those cuts could lead the sheriff to take some drastic measures, leading to more guns on the street.
Law abiding citizens could possibly get the right to carry concealed weapons in Sacramento County - protecting yourself and your family if budget cuts wipe about 300 sheriff's deputies off the streets.
Easy acquisition of concealed weapons permits for law abiding residents is one idea being considered by Sheriff John McGinness, whose ranks could be decimated by cuts under debate by the county supervisors.
The Sheriff's frustration with the budget is making him re-evaluate the consequences of easy access to concealed weapons permits. If the Sheriff loses more than 300 deputies and support personnel, his agency can't investigate property crimes - leaving the community extremely vulnerable to criminals.
Right now, it's difficult to get a concealed weapons permit in Sacramento County. A law enforcement committee examines each application. McGinness stays out of the process. But budget cuts could force the system to be streamlined.
The Sheriff hasn't finalized his plans, but a shrinking Sheriff's department could mean you'll have to defend yourself - and you might be able to get the permit to do it.

The sad thing is that it is actually taking something like this for this Sheriff to "allow" people the ability to defend themselves. My county has been issuing CCWs for years and haven't had any problems. And Sac County isn't the only ones hurting with budget woes. Our Sheriff's Office is looking at loosing almost 75% of their field deputies.

You are absolutely right. At one time I looked up CCW in my county and if I remember correctly, one could be issued a CCW if they resided in the rural areas of the county. If one resided in the city limits, forget about it. Especially if the cities have their own PD.
Welcome to California.

In So Cal, it takes an act of congress (and you have to know the sheriff personally) to get a CCW. Oh, and a generous campaign fund contribution goes a long way to ensure issuance too.

Pinki, This may help you out when you decide to move. As you can see, PGG's county is in green and is a will issue CCW county. My county is in yellow, which is a may issue CCW county. I have to prove that I have a need for it.

Thanks CTR! I didn't realize there were so many will issue counties out there! Orange County, however, I've heard has begun recalling them, so I'm not sure that is really a will issue. Y'all need to increase the round counts too
My Dad would like me back in Cali, though...

Plus, if I get a carry permit, is it only good in that county, or can I carry in the entire State?

Come here Pinki - The whole state of Texas has been "Shall Issue" since like 1994, with almost zero problems with license holders. Almost any cop in Texas will tell you that it's the people without a license that they worry about.

It appears that you can carry in the entire state, but not sure. This is all I could find on the FAQ on that site.

I live in X County, but I work in Z County. Where do I apply?
You must apply in your county of residence. If you live in a city with its own Police Department, you may be able to apply to that PD.

If you get a CCW issued here it is good for the whole state unless otherwise stated on the CCW itself

Doesn't include California,,, But if you get a CHL in Texas, you can legally carry a gun in a bunch of other states with recipriical agreements (not counting the states we have granted unilateral proclamations and special conditions, which usually means that their licensed CCW residents can carry a gun in Texas but licensed Texans can't carry guns there).

This is another thing that I think sucks about the state of California regarding honoring out of state CCW's. They don't.

I have a permit from (any other state). Is my permit honored in California?
California does not honor any other state’s concealed weapons permits! See California A.G. FAQ

I would think that some of the more rural counties such as San Bernadino would be a bit more lenient.
