Germany: Pile-up Accident of 259 Cars ? New Tang Dynasty Television

The pile-up caused chaos on this stretch of the German autobahn near Hanover.

A total of 259 cars were involved in a series of shunts late on Sunday.

The accidents took place on a 30-kilometre stretch of the A2 road.

Heavy rain and low-lying sun have been blamed.

But police say many drivers were traveling too quickly for the weather conditions.

The emergency services faced a busy night.

Firefighter Klaus Wulfes.

[Klaus Wulfes, Peine Fire Department]:
"I have not seen anything like this before. I have seen many accidents but never a pile-up this size."

Sixty people were injured. Ten are in a critical condition.

Rescue workers spent all night clearing the stretch of motorway between Berlin and Hanover.

The road has now re-opened.

But the authorities estimate the cost of the pile-up will be at least two million dollars.

That one dumb little fender-bender I've had to work took me almost 3 hours including taking info from the driver, running licenses, then going back to the office to create the sketch and fill out the State report on the computer

You will get better at them. I can fill out a CR-3 and do the diagram in about 20 mins now. Just wait till Jan 1, 2010 when they come out with the new CR-3. Its nuts what TXDOT is trying to do with this form.

Doesn't bear thinging about if that happened here recording the driver, owner and passenger details for every vehicle along with contact numbers and insurance details.

I wonder how big the drawing of the vehicle positions will be

they will need one of those old skool fax rolls to draw a 30 km stretch of road.

Ah, I like our MV-4000, you can get through it quick, unless you have a fatal. It is basically a fill in the bubbles and a quick sketch (not to scale)

We use LA Crash reporting system which is all computorized like all our reports, no paper here.

LOL, we're only supposed to use the one wrecker company in town - I think he has two trucks. How many days is that if he hauls one per hour?

We used to be able to just hand them a self-prepared "Blue Form" if there were no injuries and the damage was minor, but those days are over - Our Chief started making us investigate every accident, even fender benders.

It has something to do with the problems victims have had collecting from the offender's insurance companies, I think. I never really asked for an explaination.
