FAIL: Police department discovers that their fancy new mobile command center worth $500,000 is illegal to drive in their state

A new and expensive mobile law enforcement command center that officials say is critical to emergency response in San Joaquin County is illegal to drive on California roadways, forcing officials to spend more taxpayer dollars to correct the problem.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department said the $500,000 vehicle is designed to coordinate emergency responses in natural disasters and fast-paced criminal investigations, but it cannot be used because it is too heavy.

The two-axle vehicle weighs about 2,060 pounds too much under California law, and the manufacturer will have to add another axle to hold up the weight and make it street-legal.

The vehicle was built in Ohio, where it is legal to drive on roadways, and was in use for about six months on local roadways until the Sheriff's office discovered the problem.

"Without the fix, we wouldn't be able to use the vehicle legally on California roadways," said Lt. John Williams of the San Joaquin Sheriff's Department.

Three deputies would have to drive it to Ohio -- a distance of 5,000 miles -- to get the vehicle fixed. The financial cost of the 11-day trip quickly adds up: travel expenses would cost $7,925 and the salaries for the deputies would cost $11,037.

The repairs themselves are covered under the manufacturer's warranty, but the process will still cost $18,962.

Stockton residents were unhappy to hear about the added expenses.

"A waste of money, a waste of taxpayer dollars, a waste of resources," said Stockton resident David Qualls.

Authorities said the vehicle is critical to local law enforcement operations and even state emergencies. Transporting the vehicle to Ohio by train or truck is too expensive, and officials are searching for cheaper methods of performing the repairs.

This is one county above me. Someone sure wasn't thinking straight. As soon as I read "illegal to drive in their state" I knew it had to be California.

I heard about that on the news last night. Seems to me that the San Joaquin Sheriffs Dept should have made sure that the vehicle conformed to California requirements before it even entered the state.

I wonder if they checked to see if the truck meets California emissions? If at all. Not sure if heavy vehicles such as this are exempt or not.

This is dumb. Rather than spend waste all that time and money, couldn't they draft some sort of LE exemption for this? Even add it to the Emergency Vehicle statute wherein they can legally violate certain codes when operating it in a time-sensitive or emergency situation?

    Just seems dumb.

even though our units are exempt from pretty much everything that has to do with vehicles... the dept still makes us get inspection stickers - have legal tint - etc... just in case some asshat wants to complain, so the admin doesn't seem like we're "above the law"... we're not above it... just excluded from it in some instances... but the public here doesn't see it that way all the time... and this is south Louisiana

now, imagine California and all those damn hippies...

If they take out the airconditioners and remove the sana & Jacuzzi, I bet that would save at least 2,000 pounds!

BTW, how are they gonna get it out of California if they can't drive it on the roads? - And should they ticket whoever drove it in?

One short line in the bid specs would have put the cost back on the vendor.

"Vehicle must conform to all applicable State and Federal laws."

That sentence or something similar should be in all bid specs.

Same thing happened here with a chunk of bridge.

DOT had it trucked in from east of here, then stopped it at the border because it was too heavy.

Trucker: Uh, you guys ordered it.

DOT: It can't go on our road.

He could have had it cut in half and delivered on two trucks, along with a big tub of superglue

If I were a San Joaquin County deputy, I'd volunteer for a paid road trip.

Here's an idea... start making some calls. Find someone who happens to have one of these in the pipe, and set up a swap. Pay for the third axle on the one under construction, then when it's done... trade 'em...

Y'know, kind of like when the uniform orders come in, and one guy gets a shirt or pants that are too small and another one some that are too big... So rather than fight through the process to get a reissue, you just trade!
