Pascagoula police kill man with machete
The Associated Press Pascagoula MS, police shot and killed a 55-year-old man Monday who allegedly tried to run over a motorcycle officer and threatened others with a machete, the chief said.
The shooting happened after a police chase began on U.S. Highway 90, Police Chief Eddie Stewart told WLOX-TV in Biloxi. Police said the suspect, Grady Wells, was originally from the Three Rivers community and was in the area visiting relatives. He was driving a 2005 Mercedes Benz with New York tags.
The man left officers little choice but to use deadly force, Stewart said.
"If you look at the facts in the case, his actions are what caused us to take the actions that we felt necessary to take," Stewart said. "It is no doubt in my mind that we took appropriate actions."
Stewart said the suspect stopped early in the pursuit and threatened officers with a machete. An officer fired three shots but the suspect was not wounded and jumped in the vehicle and took off.
At one point, the suspect tried to run over a motorcycle officer, Stewart said. That officer sustained cuts and bruises when he jumped out of the way.
Stewart said the man was stopped and threatened officers again with the machete. Police fired four shots at the suspect, killing him.
"The facts of the case will be presented to a Jackson County grand jury," Stewart said.
The chief said the officers' names will be released later.
"All officers involved will be given as much time off from duty as needed to cope with this unfortunate incident," according to a news release from the police department.*************************"It wouldn't take much for me to up and run...to another life somewhere in the sun."

Glad the officers are safe. Hope the officer who got cuts and bruises jumping out of the way recovers quickly.
