Rare Drug A New Problem For Police
by UPI Wire
Apr 1, 2006
ST. PAUL, Minn. - March 31, 2006 (UPI) -- Minnesota police are seeing more of a drug called khat, illegal in the United States and Canada but OK in parts of Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
Khat, pronounced "cot," is a brown leafy drug grown in Africa. When chewed or brewed into tea it creates a euphoric feeling.
Ramsey County, Minn., law enforcement officials seized 260 pounds of khat in March, more than they took during all of 2005.
Khat is a lower level drug compared to cocaine or heroin, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. It loses potency quickly, so many producers ship it to the United States overnight.
Police found 40 pounds at a Maple Grove, Minn., FedEx location on Thursday.
Khat also reduces the appetite and is popular with Muslim users fasting during the month-long Ramadan holiday season.
Omar Jamal, executive director of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center, says users become lazy, but he warns of a misrepresentation of the problem. He says East African immigrants don't know khat is illegal, since it is accepted in their home country, and says the situation is more culture clash than crime wave.

A smile cost nothing, but gives so much.
It enriches those who receive it,without making poorer those who give.It takes but a moment, but the memoryof it sometimes lasts forever.
None is so rich or mighty that hecan get along without it,and none is so poor but thathe can be made rich by it.
A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in business, and is the countersign of friendship.
It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad,and it is nature's best antidote for trouble.
Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed,or stolen, for it is something that is of novalue to anyone until it is given away.
Some people are too tired to give you a smile.Give them one of yours, as none needs a smileso much as he who has no more to give.

It is a Central Nervous System stimulant, similar to cocaine. It produces euphoria, as well as a sense of invulnerability. It is the stuff the Somalias were chewing on in the movie "Black Hawk Down".www.alliedoddballs.com
I can't do this test when I am sober!

They sell that stuff at the grocery store! I use it in salads. I call them "Happy Salads"
Just out of curiousity, why is it illegal?"Look, just give me some inner peace or I'll mop the floor with you!"

Anybody with some REAL information as to why the drug is illegal? Or do I actually have to get up off my ass (figuratively) and do a search?"Look, just give me some inner peace or I'll mop the floor with you!"
