2 Officer Attempt to Cover Up Wreck
This sickens me like you wouldn't believe. I hate to say it, but I probably know these guys. This is the agency I started out with. Mardis was my Captain then. He is the Chief now, and I will say that he is a class act. If you were right he would back you 100%. Glad to see he swings just as hard from the other side.

Damn
Just because your sign off after you're shift is done, doesn't mean that it's over and put blinders on. You're a cop 24/7 wether you like it or not. If thats something you can't handle, you should find a new line of work!

I'm sorry but you'd have to be an idiot to try to do that. Why not just be honest? They're going to find out anyways. Unless there was more to it he'd probably receive severe discipline but he would still be employed.

Five-O I also know Pat, I must agree he is a standup guy; these 2 knuckleheads should've just called him when the crash happened and manned up and took the suspension etc.
Sad thing about this is, now that it has gotten this far along the Chief doesn't have much recourse except to fire and present evidence to the DA...Job security...

And PAC you know he could deal with an HONEST mistake. The integrity of the department within the community demanded this action. It brings me no joy to know that he had to do this. I hope I didn't come off in that manner. The man, Pat, gets a free lunch on me the next time we meet though.

Wow, sounds like some of the stunts from the TV show "The Shield".
A big appology for using it without permission and an offer to pay for fixing it themselves would have probably been a better course of action.

WOW!!! My dad always taught me that when you screw up, own up to it and take the consequences. If he found out about it later and that you lied about it, the consequences would be much worse and that you couldn't be trusted.
But then again, my dad was LE even if for a short time. Go figure.

You know... The guy'd be taking some lumps, but depending on his status in the department and history (and specifics like alcohol content...), his career probably could have survived. And he definitely wouldn't have taken his buddy down with him.
Instead, not only did they lie -- but they created a false scenario. Unfortunately, it makes you wonder what else they created over their careers...Voting against incumbents until we get a Congress that does its job.

SI VIS PACEM PARA BELLUM-Ex-Sheriff Martin Howe to Will Kane in "High Noon"
"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."
Far from being a handicap to command, compassion is the measure of it. For unless one values the lives of his soldiers and is tormented by their ordeals , he is unfit to command.

Good job, Chief! Honest mistakes, no matter how dumb they might be, are mistakes. There is no excuse for lying.
What is happening in our profession??
This has been a bad year for law enforcement - even in AL. I can think of at least 12 officers that have been charged/fired in 2009 alone in our state.
I say this not to cast a negative light on law enforcement, but rather to express my disbelief that it could happen in the first place. Is there something that could be done to change this trend?
