Cincinatti Officers Involved in Suicide by Cop Incident

I haven't been able to find this in any news articles as of yet, but they will be out soon. I will repeat what I have heard on the news. Remember this is from my memory so some of it may be just a bit different that what I'm recalling:

Suspect was pulled over on a traffic stop. Gives the officer a false name, false DOB, and can't remember his SS#. When the officer tries to get him out of the vehicle, the suspect gets out but reaches back and takes a gun from the vehicle. He didn't point it at the officer so the officer did not shoot at him. Suspect takes off running. Another officer joins the chase. Suspect runs to a local tire dealership and threatens 2 employees with the gun, employees take off running. A third officer has come upon the scene at this time. A fourth officer, hearing the radio traffic responds as it is in her immediate area. She sees the suspect who enters a dealership truck. Suspect cannot get the vehicle to move, officer runs up to the truck door and opens it and tasers the suspect, without results, suspect tries to shut the door and officer reloads and fires a second taser cartridge at suspect but only one prong hits him. Suspect then pulls the gun on the officer who ducks as suspect fires at her. A fifth officer, also hearing what is happening on the radio arrives at that moment, opens fire on the suspect firing 13 rounds. One of the original officers fires 4 rounds. No officer sustained any injury.

Suspects family said that they feel the suspect was trying to commit suicide by cop due to his actions prior to the incident and told the Chief of Police they do not hold the police accountable for any of their actions. They also said they were glad that no officers were hurt during the incident.

All but a few seconds of the chase and the shooting were caught on video cameras that have been installed in the area.

As soon as I find more information on this incident I will post it. The information I printed about was gathered from the Chief of Police on a talk radio station at noontime today. He actually was supposed to be on the same show yesterday but was called to the scene of the above incident on his way to the radio station. The Chief also stated that these 5 officers will be put in for a Medal of Valor. The first and second officer are about 20 year veterans, the third officer has about 30 years in, the female officer who tased the suspect is a 15 year veteran, and the fifth officer has 5 years in and is in a special task force investigation unit.

She is most definately lucky. i don't know exactly why she chose to use the taser, I do know that she was in very close contact with him at the time. If it wasn't for the 5th officer coming on scene she would have been hit. Suspect did get a few rounds off at her. Apparently she ducked out of the way in time.

Well if the suspect is firing on the police I'd say it's more "attempted murder of a police officer" than suicide by cop.

Yep, an officer I know took a taser to a man with gun call and he wound up getting shot by the suspect.

Taser. The miracle less than lethal weapon. Folks are getting scared to engage with a firearm even when it is most necessary. Glad everyone is ok. Hope a lesson is learned here.

+ 1, I know of depts that think the Taser is the gun they should use, because they are worried about being sued.
