Police: Money from Patterson ‘fundraiser' misused
Advertised as a fundraiser for the family of hit-and-run victim Gordon Patterson, a Sept. 27 car wash drew hundreds of dollars in donations from the public.
Now, police say, most of the money is missing and fundraiser organizer, Mallory P. Ewart, is suspected of siphoning it to help bail defendant Antonio Cellestine out of jail.
Ewart, 18, of Vancouver was summoned to appear in Clark County District Court Nov. 24 to face a charge of third-degree theft by deception. A city prosecuting attorney, Kevin McClure, filed the misdemeanor charge on Nov. 3.
Meanwhile, Cellestine, charged with felony hit and run in the Sept. 15 death of Patterson, remains in the Clark County Jail.
Patterson, 50,was a popular technology teacher at Hudson's Bay High School. He was killed by a motorist while bicycling home.
The 18-year-old Cellestine, who posted bail in September, was re-arrested Oct. 31 after police found him in possession of marijuana and alcohol during a party at his St. Johns Road apartment.
According to McClure's probable cause affidavit, Ewart, Cellestine's girlfriend, organized a car wash in the parking lot of Benny's Rod and Custom Pizza Cafe, 4219 N.E. St. Johns Road. Several friends helped her hold signs and yell to passing cars to "Support the Pattersons."
The all-day car wash drew between 30 and 40 cars, many of which belonged to parishioners of Patterson's church, First Evangelical Church. The church's pastor had made an announcement to the congregation about the car wash.
Investigators were tipped off that the fundraiser may be a scam after seizing a taped jail conversation between Cellestine and Ewart. The affidavit said Ewart allegedly admitted "she got around $500 from the car wash of which she was applying toward his (Cellestine's) bail."
