A man suspected of shooting and killing eight people on Tuesday near a thickly wooded area of south-central Virginia surrendered Wednesday morning, a State Police official said.

The state police identified the suspect as Christopher Speight, 39.

The authorities gathered in Appomattox, Va., near the scene where several people were shot.

The police reassured the public after an all-night standoff in which more than 100 officers surrounded the man, who the police said on Tuesday shot at several officers and hit a police helicopter, forcing it to make an emergency landing.
