Raunel Soto, 39, was charged with endangering a child, a state jail felony, after police said he allowed his 14-year-old niece to drive drunk Friday night, an arrest affidavit said.
Officers stopped a Ford Explorer near Springdale and Bandera roads in East Austin just before midnight. The driver tried to pull over to the curb but instead drove onto a home's front yard, the affidavit said. The driver was a 14-year-old girl, whose name was not released because of her age, according to the affidavit.
The vehicle was registered to Soto, who was the front-seat passenger, police said. A girl and a boy, both 16, rode in the back seat and smelled of alcohol and marijuana, the affidavit said. Soto also smelled like alcohol and could not stand up on his own, the affidavit said.
The driver, Soto's niece, was later charged with driving while intoxicated, the affidavit said. Soto also was charged with public intoxication.
