Walmart probes racial comment broadcast over loudspeakers at South Jersey store

TURNERSVILLE Two black South Jersey women are boycotting Walmart as authorities investigate a public announcement targeting black shoppers at the Turnersville store over the weekend.

Walmart officials said they're reviewing security tapes to find out who asked "all black people" to leave the store in a message over the public-address system shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday.
Patricia Covington and Shelia Ellington, both of Monroe, said they're too upset to shop at the discount chain after hearing a male voice calmly announce: "Attention Walmart customers: All black people leave the store now."

I bet some one found out what buttons to push on an aisle phone. Announced it and left.

This. I worked at a grocery store in high school. I went to another store that had the same satellite radio system that my store had. Unfortunatly, they left their remote unattended and within reach in their customer service booth. Their customers enjoyed some death metal until their managment found the remote that might have been hidden behind some cartons of smokes.

2 people are boycotting? Think it'll make a difference?

    An arrest has been made

A man has been arrested for allegedly announcing a hateful message over a South Jersey Wal-Mart's intercom, police told NBC Philadelphia. The unidentified man, who is from Atlantic County, N.J., was taken into custody Friday evening, police said.
Officials are staying tight-lipped on the arrest, but more details are expected to be released at a press conference Saturday.

Authorities have previously said the person responsible could be charged with harassment and bias intimidation.

That seems more like simple Disorderly Conduct.

I thought harassment had to be ongoing - i.e., more than once, and doing it anonymously and/or not stopping after being told to stop.

What the Hell kind of charge is 'bias intimidation"?

I've charged people with harassment/stalking (MN's version) after an assault by using this paragraph:
    (1) directly or indirectly manifests a purpose or intent to injure the person, property, or rights of another by the commission of an unlawful act.

So harassment (in MN anyway) can have uses that don't require it to be ongoing.

an arrest made? seriously? for what? a fucking joke made in terrible taste...i think thats a little over the top, especially those charges. they make it sound like the guys a kkk member. maybe he is. then i could see how the charges would fit the incident. but im guessing its just your average asshole who thought he was being funny. ban him from the store and call it a day.

BEAT ME TO IT. Bias crime? That's weak...especially if the intercom was in a publically accessible area.

This is what happens when you attempt to criminalize behavior that would not otherwise be a crime but for the fact someone had their feelings hurt.

Whoever said that on the PA needs their ass kicked to be sure, but criminally charged?

That's like charging someone for swearing.

I think this is kinda funny. AND, as with most things dealing with race, or anything that can be remotely linked to it (illegitimate or otherwise) has been blown way out of proportion.
And FYI: Wal-Mart, company-wide, has removed all phones from all aisles due to this...
