Arrrrrgghhhh, don't mess with these "pirates"
WASHINGTON (AFP) – A US warship operating in the Indian Ocean captured five suspected pirates Thursday after an exchange of gunfire in international waters near the Seychelles, the Pentagon said.
The frigate USS Nicholas took the piracy suspects into custody after the warship sank a skiff, and confiscated a suspected mother ship, said a statement from US Naval Forces.
"While operating west of the Seychelles in international waters, Nicholas reported taking fire at 12:27 am local time from a suspected pirate skiff and returned fire before commencing pursuit of the vessel until the disabled skiff stopped," the statement said.

They fired at a US warship?
Oh yes, children. I can imagine the Captain almost wet himself exploring the possibilities....

When I read this, I kinda wondered if everyone aboard the US ship kinda started giggling with anticipation when those pirates started shooting. I mean, it's probably hard to laugh when someone's shooting at you, but when you think, "man...those idiots. We're going to completely vaporize that ricketty-ass 'boat' and wipe those pirates off the face of the earth," I don't think I'd be able to stifle my smile.

Say what you will about the Navy (from a guy who was on an NROTC scholarship), but those guys have the means at their disposal to rain some SERIOUS misgivings on those who are stupid enough to engage them. While the individual men and women on warships aren't ever really thought of as a "warrior class", the ships they collectively man are sufficiently mighty to give any armed force pause. The Phalanx CIWS they have should make any serious gun enthusiast tent his pants.

I have a mental picture: Rudy-Poot, Earl, and the rest of the pirate gang are floating along, waiting on their next catch to come by. Rudy-Poot is kind of new at this and he's always been "special" but he's the local warlord's nephew.
A big gray ship comes tooling by so Rudy-Poot throws his AK up to his shoulder and cuts loose with a burst. Earl and all the other pirates turn and stare at Rudy-Poot, open mouthed. Scene ends with Earl beating the snarf out of Rudy-Poot as ordinance from the USN frigate splashes all around the boat.*************************"It wouldn't take much for me to up and run...to another life somewhere in the sun."

I do have to wonder at someone who fires a .30 caliber popgun at a big gray warship.
