Mendocino deputies decry pay proposals

Members of the Mendocino County's Deputy Sheriff's Association say county negotiators are demanding a 24 percent pay cut from the group's 130 members.
“I don't know anyone in the association who can take a 24 percent pay cut and keep their homes,” said Kevin Bailey, an investigator with the District Attorney's Office. The association also represents Sheriff's deputies and jail officers.
County officials said Thursday they cannot comment on ongoing labor negotiations.
The county has been struggling to erase a $7.6 million deficit in its $56 million general fund budget. It's begun eliminating 100 county positions, a move expected to save about $2.5 million next year.
Sheriff Tom Allman said he's been asked to cut almost $2 million from a $20 million budget. But it's really closer to a $4 million reduction because his department is over budget, he said.
County supervisors have been supportive of the Sheriff's Office but they've also said everyone must share in the cutbacks.
Bailey said county negotiators are asking for more than a fair share. They initially asked association members to take a pay cut of nearly 30 percent, he said.
The membership has unanimously rejected the demands, Bailey said.

This shit that is happening is straight-up gangsta. Tulsa PD offered the Union 2 options: 17-18% pay cuts for every pay grade or lay-off everyone with less than 5 years. You can guess which one they voted for.....

It's incredible how cops have to bear the brunt of years of terrible mismanagement by city and county council members who funnel money to ridiculous pet projects at the expense of public safety. Fucking sad.
