KEY WEST, Fla. -- Nearly 500 motorcycle riders have roared up the Florida Keys Overseas Highway to begin an epic race across North America to the Kenai Peninsula.

The riders who set off Sunday to complete the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge's roughly 7,000-mile route from Key West to Homer aim to win $500,000 in Alaska gold.

The scheduled completion date of the journey through 62 mountain ranges, 25 national forests, eight deserts, 33 Indian reservations and two countries is July 4. The event's name is derived from a Lakota Sioux expression shouted by warriors as they went into battle.
