N.C. Man Killed After Being Shot With Taser Gun

DUBLIN, N.C. -- A Bladen County man has died after a sheriff's deputy shot him with a Taser gun, authorities said.

Billy Ray Cook, 39, of Dublin, died in the emergency room at Bladen County Hospital on Sunday.

Deputies who responded to a complaint earlier that night described Cook as incoherent and irrational. Cook assaulted a deputy who approached him, Sheriff Steve Bunn said. A deputy shot him with the Taser gun, which delivers a jolt of electricity, in an attempt to subdue him, but Cook pulled the wires from his body.

Cook was restrained and collapsed a few minutes later. The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case.

Mark Butler, a friend of Cook's for more than 30 years, was helping to arrange a funeral.
