More than 30 dogs and cats perished in a Covelo structure fire Saturday night, fire officials said.
Among the dead are 25 disabled and ailing dogs kept inside the home of Barbara Thrasher, who runs Bones Pet Rescue in rural northeastern Mendocino County, said Covelo Fire Department Chief Bill Baker.
Ten cats also perished in the 5 p.m. blaze, Thrasher said. Its just devastating.
The victims included a dog undergoing cancer treatment and one that was paraplegic.
Another 46 dogs, about 100 cats, two horses and some pigs and goats at the Refuse Road sanctuary survived the fire, which also burned about 40 acres and two outbuildings on adjacent properties.
