Woman who stabbed boyfriend gets year in jail

SAN DIEGO – A woman who stabbed her boyfriend in the neck during a confrontation in a Rolando area home was sentenced Wednesday to a year in county jail and three years probation.
Amara Taylor, 28, pleaded guilty last month to assault with a deadly weapon – a knife.

Superior Court Judge David Danielsen ordered the defendant to stay away from the victim during her time on probation.

Taylor stabbed Larry Ferris last Nov. 21 as he held her after she bent down to pick up a torn $5 bill, according to testimony at her Jan. 5 preliminary hearing.

At that hearing, Judge Christine Pate dismissed a charge of attempted murder against Taylor.

San Diego police Detective Steven Epperson testified that Taylor showed signs of being under the influence of methamphetamine when he interviewed her after her arrest.

Epperson said he also had information that the defendant suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disease.

The detective said Taylor, in a rambling statement, inferred that Ferris was “Godzilla” and that he killed Jesus Christ.

Ferris testified that Taylor was “always talking nonsense,” and that most days are hard for her because of her mental illness.
