Police officers save man from drowning, then he attacks them
One officer had an eye injury and was treated and released, according to the article.Four Atlantic City officers with lifeguard experience pulled a drowning man from the ocean, and he returned the favor by fighting them, police said Monday.
Police said they were called to the Arkansas Avenue beach at 11 p.m. Saturday about a man who was drowning in the ocean. Officer James Herbert, who had worked on the Atlantic City Beach Patrol, grabbed a floatation device and swam out to the man, who was grabbing onto a piling under The Pier At Caesars about 200 yards from shore.
Because of rough surf and the man’s large size, Herbert could not rescue the man by himself, police said. Officers Darrell Catanio and Christian Garofalo, both former Atlantic City lifeguards, and Officer Sterling Wheaton, who is on the Longport Beach Patrol, swam out to help. The four officers brought the man safely to shore.
Once he was back on land, the man, Tyrone Keys, 26, of Rosemont Place in Atlantic City, began cursing, yelling and kicking the officers, police said. Restraining him was difficult because everyone was wet and covered with sand.
