Armed combat erupted in Mendocino County pot gardens Wednesday morning when deputies shot and killed a suspect wielding an assault rifle while in a nearby garden drug enforcement agents engaged in a shootout with growers.


It was the second deadly marijuana-patch shooting in the county by a deputy in three weeks and the fourth killing by law enforcement officers on the North Coast this summer.

“It’s getting violent out there,” said Mendocino County Sheriff’s Capt. Kurt Smallcomb.

Both shootings Wednesday were connected with a multi-agency, 60-officer operation on private property between Laytonville and Branscomb in northern Mendocino County, officials said.

These are producers, and where there is criminal money there is violence.

We certainly are never going to solve this problem the way we should.

I've seen alot of end users here get violent. I've also seen alot of DUIs from the stuff also. This time of year the whole county just stinks of the crap. The stuff has ruined this area.

MJ alone, don't get me wrong though, we have alot of other stuff also. It seems like MJ is #1, followed by meth, then alcohol, PCP is probably next

Eh, I've seen people drive on it and crash and I've seen people injure people to get it.

I have yet to see someone fight _me_ who was simply stoned.

Not saying it never happens, just saying it would seem to be a rarer event.

If we aren't willing to wade in and start engaging an invading force, the only route left would appear to be to trash their business model and wait them out.

We've had lots of fights and homicides with people under the influence of it. Along with alot of fatal traffic collisions.

I agree with the other thing you said though. We need to deal with all of this as an invading force.

Are you saying you've had a homicide (other than vehicular, which I completely get) where marijuana was the contributing factor because of intoxication?

yes, one late last year comes to mind. Just a couple miles from our office. Guy and his "workers" were smoking their own product, had an argument over the proper way to "water the plants". Workers got upset, beat him up, and threw him over a cliff, resulting with his death. His wife was tied up and left to die in one of the gardens we found. She is still among the living.

I'm sure our per capita of people that use dope is much higher here. Hence why I see stuff all the time.

Had an indoor MJ grower murder his 'business partner' in front of his (killer's) girlfriend. The g/f assisted with removal of the body, clean-up, and burial of body in neighboring county. This mellow MJ farmer had a further problem, he liked to thump on the g/f. She had enough of that and ratted on him. All marijuana users but the passive behavior disappeared when the money became an issue.

Huge amounts of cash buys the political corruption off the top that enables these growers to survive and flourish. Laundering the money locally is quite attractive to some, and good for business. You get more mileage for your political graft money if you shop for, and buy politicians locally.

Then the Mexican cartels move in and take over.

Not sure of that at all. Washington is the home of the indoor grow op and BC bud comes in by the chopper load.

I think the violence follows the money and sometimes the culture of the people in question.
