Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman will receive the Governor's Public Safety Medal of Valor for pulling a woman from a burning car a year ago.

Local Cal Fire Battalion Chief Jim Wattenburger, who nominated Allman, told the Daily Journal about the award and said he understands that Allman was at the top of the list of awards this year.

Governor Schwarzenegger's Office could not officially confirm the award Thursday because the awards are announced later in the month but, when contacted, Allman said he has a received a letter giving him the news.

The ceremony is expected to take place in Sacramento Sept. 28.

Wattenburger said Allman will also get the Medal of Valor from the California State Fireman's Association in October.

Allman was among the first on the scene on August, 11 2009 when a Geo Metro burst into flames on Highway 101 just south of the Calpella exit.

Allman reached into the burning car and pulled a woman from the flames, suffering serious burns on his hands and arms.
