Is this happening in your town?
Why Did 106 restaurants close? | Des Moines Register Staff Blogs
I knew some of the owners of the closed business. This is my take on a couple of them.
Graze - Mr. Wonderful and his "Chicken Lips" (see my state fair thread)
Corner Cafe - Owner sold out to Urbandale Cafe employees. They are doing HUGE buisness!
Michael's - Mike had this location for almost 38 years. Mike was going to retire in two years but the building owner wanted a 5 year lease. Mike folded. I worked for Mike at 25 years ago. He was still using some of my recipes up to the day he closed. The building has sat empty for 1 year.
Urbandale Cafe - Forced out of strip mall location by Hy-Vee Grocery Stores (The Evil Empire)
This relocated but the customers did not follow.
Porky's Diner - Best breakfast in town. Location of Des Moines biggest Classic car and motorcycle nights. Hy-Vee Grocery Stores (The Evil Empire) bought out the land and bull dozed this classic. The land is locked in a FCC dispute over relocating a cell phone tower.

I haven't noticed that around here - I'm always surprised that all of the diners in NJ can stay in business.

Haven't noticed any mass closing around here.'Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a
delusional, illogical liberal minority, and rabidly
promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which
holds forth the proposition that it is entirely
possible to pick up a turd by the clean end!'

We've had a couple close down, but there are just as many new ones opening. For the morning will come. Brightly will it shine on the brave and true, kindly upon all who suffer for the cause, glorious upon the tombs of heroes. Thus will shine the dawn.
