Conkers removed over safety fears in Nottingham

BBC News - Conkers removed over safety fears in Nottingham

Conkers have been removed from a large horse chestnut tree in part of Nottingham over safety fears.
City council workers used a high-rise platform to remove conkers from a tree on Queen's Walk in the Meadows on Friday.
The council said a girl suffered a serious head injury last year after being hit by a stick - thrown up into the tree to dislodge conkers.
It said action was being taken to avoid further injuries.
Health and safety you got to love.

Bloody stupid game anyway, never was able to get much more than a single figure conker!
Baked, soaked in vinegar whatever mine never lasted.

Ok, you two have got to explain this one. Game? Single figure conker? And what is this about soaking in vinegar and baking?

    Dang foreigners.

As kids you try to get your conker harder(supposedly more likely to win) by a variety of measures i.e baking, soak in vinegar etc. Basically cheating!

I looked it up, which got me on the subject of buckeyes, then sweet chestnuts, then candied chestnuts and finally leather tanning. And people wonder why I'm so damn random, being in my head is like a never ending episode of James Burke's Connections.

I do the same thing - start off looking up nylon thread and wind up with a history of winch cable.

Yacht varnish or resin was a good bet and a slightly elastic string to hold it, all banned at the world championships I expect.
