World conker games crisis averted
Following on from my health and safety news story here is another conker related story.
BBC News - World conker games crisis averted
A crisis in this year's World Conker Championships has been averted after a call for "good-sized" nuts was made.
The competition in Northamptonshire was threatened by a shortage of conkers when disease and pestilence blighted the trees on which they grow.
Organisers at Ashton Conker Club in Polebrook sent out an SOS when local trees only produced small nuts.
Club secretary John Hadman said there were now enough big conkers for the 360 entrants to fight it out for the title.
Now in its 46th year, the 360 players from 17 countries will compete for the title next Sunday."all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing" Edmund Burke.

BBC News - World Conker Championships win 'due to maths formula'
They found enough nuts and we have a winnerThe winner of a conker championships which had been threatened by a shortage of "good-sized" nuts has put his victory down to a mathematical formula.
Ray Kellock, 64, won the men's title at the World Conker Championships in Ashton, near Oundle, Northamptonshire, by using a combination of kinetic and potential energy, he said.
Organisers had to appeal for help finding big conkers before the event.
The shortage was blamed on disease blighting the trees on which they grow.
Mr Kellock's victory was his second at the championships, following his win in the 2008 event."all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing" Edmund Burke.
