Off duty cop saves choking man
BOONTON - An off-duty Madison police detective eating dinner with his family on Saturday night saved a man from choking on a piece of food, police said.
While at the Reservoir Tavern in Boonton, Edward Mitchko, a 16-year veteran of the Madison Police Department, noticed a man grabbing his throat and choking, according to a statement by the Madison police.
Another person attempted to perform the Heimleich maneuver to dislodge the food, but was unsuccessful.
At that point, Mitchko approached the man and attempted several times to dislodge the food using the Heimlich maneuver, police said. The man began to pass out, but several thrusts later, the food was dislodged.

"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."
Far from being a handicap to command, compassion is the measure of it. For unless one values the lives of his soldiers and is tormented by their ordeals , he is unfit to command.
