Candidate for governor identified as "Rich Whitey" due to typo in electronic voting machines in Chicago
More here: Chicago Ballots Identify Candidate Rich Whitney as "Rich Whitey" - Political Hotsheet - CBS NewsIt's the typo to end all typos: Illinois gubernatorial candidate Rich Whitney's name is misspelled as "Rich Whitey" on some electronic-voting machines in Chicago, and officials say the problem can't be fixed before election day.
The Chicago Sun-Times, which broke the story, notes that half of the flawed machines are in predominantly African-American areas of the city. The problem is present in 23 of Chicago's 50 wards.
"I don't want to be identified as 'Whitey.' If this is happening in primarily African-American wards, that's an even bigger concern," Whitney, the Green party candidate, told the Sun-Times.

Remember that your President learned his political trade here....in the land of the corrupt political process. I tried....I mean I really tried to work up some outrage....but it's Chicago so what the hell.

"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."
Far from being a handicap to command, compassion is the measure of it. For unless one values the lives of his soldiers and is tormented by their ordeals , he is unfit to command.

I'm shocked, I tell you! SHOCKED! Who would have thought anything like this could happen in Chicago?
For the morning will come. Brightly will it shine on the brave and true, kindly upon all who suffer for the cause, glorious upon the tombs of heroes. Thus will shine the dawn.

I'm most interested in why with weeks to go there wasn't time to correct a "typo". (whatever the cause, it's not all that interesting to me) The coding involved would take all of 10 minutes to fix on a slow day - what in this vetting process takes so long: if so thorough why also so flawed it didn't catch this: which overseas company was it outsourced to that can't be bothered to update it for a month? Even under the microscope of national press there's zero effort? There's no ballot to reprint, no mention of unreasonable costs to have this electronic system recertified. Just "can't be done" is an acceptable answer?
This is a nation that used to be able to bring people home from the moon with duct tape, ingenuity and drive. Now with multiples of the time available and no risk of death (injury, job loss, stapler burn, anything really) there's nothing that can be done. Didn't voting used to be one of our most sacredly held rights? Fascinating.

Hey, stapler burn is the scourge of our modern era, Odd. Do you know how many children are maimed each year by Swingline accidents? Do you?
