North Korea artillery hits S.Korea island
– 14 mins ago
SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea on Tuesday fired dozens of artillery shells at a South Korean island, setting buildings on fire and prompting a return of fire by the South, Seoul's military and media reports said.
A witness said residents of the island of Yeonpyeong, off the west coast of the peninsula near a disputed maritime border, had been evacuated.
Yonhap news agency said four South Korean soldiers had been wounded in the shelling, the biggest attack in years.
YTN television quoted a witness as saying 60 to 70 houses were on fire after the shelling and TV footage showed plumes of smoke coming from the island. It said a South Korean fighter jet had been deployed to the west coast after the shelling.
"Houses and mountains are on fire and people are evacuating. You can't see very well because of plumes of smoke," a witness on the island told YTN.
"People are frightened to death and shelling continues as we speak," the witness said.

People keep screwing around and we're going to be in another war next thing you know. I don't know much about the politics over there but you would think China would lean on N Korea a bit to keep us away from over there.

China is now between a rock and a hard place re North Korea. After years of propping up that idiot, they suddenly realize that they can no longer control him or his son, who was just placed in the line of succession.
They don't want to help the west contain this fool....but they really don't want us to have to come over there and kick his ass....we would be way too close for their comfort and the loss of face would be unacceptable.
Now they have to figure out how to muzzle this fool without getting the west into an armed conflict on their border.
Good luck with that, guys.

I see this as a test of our resolve as well. If we fail to stand behind our allies in South Korea, it will affirm a world view of us as a country that can't be trusted or depended upon.
For the morning will come. Brightly will it shine on the brave and true, kindly upon all who suffer for the cause, glorious upon the tombs of heroes. Thus will shine the dawn.
