Homeowner shoots and kills suspected burglar

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A homeowner was arrested Saturday after he reportedly shot a man who tried to break into his home.

Richard Alexander, 28, is charged with manslaughter after police say he chased the alleged burglar out of his house on North 26th Street - then shot and killed the man.

Keith Brown, 23, is suspected of breaking into the house Friday night around 10:30 p.m. Baton Rouge police say they found Brown laying in the driveway with multiple gunshot wounds. He later died in the hospital.

Police say Alexander went from victim to suspect when he chased Brown away from the house while he was trying to get away. Police say if the shooting had happened inside of Alexander's home, this could be a whole different story.

If I take the story at face value, I'd have to say that to support the use of deadly force to defend myself, I also must support punishment for excess use of such. I think (taking the story at face value) that if the person is exiting the house and isn't posing an immediate and clear threat to life and limb of someone, that the proper course of action is to not kill them if possible.

At that point a person cannot use deadly force. Pursuit and apprehension is allowed. If however the apprehension turns violent again on behalf of the suspect...well...game on.
