That's a pretty impressive deal. I saw a glimpse on TV about $1000 houses, but nothing else about it.

They tried that down here years ago at a large department near here. I think there were about 2 takers and they did not stay in the houses long.

They tried that for a couple of years where I was before. Offered a free place plus a $10,000 cash bonus. Not a single officer signed up during those years

Theres a similiar program through HUD called "Officer Next Door" you can get in a house for half the listing price. Only catch is most of the time its closer to where you get calls to all the time rather than where you actually want to relax when you get off shift.

It is very sad that so many of them have been abandoned. However, what is rarely shown in images from Detroit are the many old Victorian neighborhoods that are still lived in and well maintained. Don't get me wrong - as in many large cities, parts of Detroit are horrific but there are still many neighborhoods that are very nice.
From what I understand, there are two neighborhoods where homes are being offered at those prices. One is the Boston-Edison neighborhood: Boston-Edison Historic District, Detroit Neighborhood and one is the Indian Village neighborhood: HISTORIC INDIAN VILLAGE - Detroit, Michigan. Abandoned homes in those areas are very different than abandoned homes in other areas.
I think that Indian Village has private security, but I'm not 100% sure. Unfortunately both of those neighborhoods are somewhat "pocket" neighborhoods, Boston-Edison maybe a bit moreso than Indian Village.
I keep hoping that my parents will eventually move out of the city, their neighborhood is close to a suburban border and is still a nice one. Most of the residents (including several cops) have been living there since I was a child. I think, though, that it's just a matter of time before things begin to change and I want them out before it does. Almost everyone else in my family has moved to the suburbs.
