Hmm. I think imbedded broken glass on fencetops and razor wire will do the trick.

Sorry to our UK guys, but the more I hear stories like this the less hope I have that the UK will be able to turn things around

I'm sorry to say this, again, don't believe what is written in the UK press or media.
It is quite frankly "bollocks" most of the time.
Putting wire mesh on your window is not a problem. I would suggest the police source quoted is some pen pushing office waller without much of a clue or heaven forbid has been misquoted! Embedding glass into the top of your wall is not generally allowed. Sometimes legitimate people, like the police and fire service need to gain access. Barbed wire is usually allowed but not razor wire.
Neither are you allowed to wire up door handles to the mains electricity. I remember one business owner getting himself locked up for trying it.
You can take common sense approaches to secure your property and still keep out the burglars. Stories of them suing whilst in the the act of commiting crime are difficult to find in the UK, however burglars suing in the letigous US seem quite common.
This article gives a more informed view of what you can do.

Motorwaycop,
We have an old saying over here. "Why let the truth get in the way of a good story?"

WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – Police are investigating the shooting of an alleged robber early Monday morning.
According to West Columbia Police Chief Dennis Tyndall, the shooting happened around 3:15am on Morningside Drive. Tyndall says the homeowner, Richard Williams, observed a man breaking into his truck at the rear of the home. Williams went to his garage and as the door opened, he encountered the unidentified suspect a short distance away on a bicycle, according to Tyndall. Williams fired his gun two times and hit the intruder.
The intruder went a short distance on the bicycle and collapsed in the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lexington County Coroner's Office.

Hmm... so I guess the pit of poisoned punji stakes surrounded by venomous snakes and the grenades strung by the pins with tension wire is a little over the top?

Not that I am against shooting the jerk off, but...it would be kinda hard to justify if the dipshit didn't have a weapon. Although, we had a man out in the county several years ago come home to catch a burglary in the act of breaking into his house. When the SU got into his truck and fled, the homeowner (probably a former Marine or Army sniper) got his hunting rifle and put one through the back of the guy's head while the SU was driving away. Not technically justified, but I said no jury would convict him of Manslaughter and I was right. They ruled it "Self Defense". Gotta love Alabama.
