Police: Half-naked man arrested after chase, punching dog
Westminster police Cpl. Cameron Knauerhaze said Scott Balbirnie of Long Beach is accused of multiple charges, including drunken driving, drug possession, drug use and assaulting a police dog.
Knauerhaze said that about 3 a.m., police received a report of road rage in the area of Beach Boulevard and the 22, and spotted Balbirnie driving erratically at Beach and Westminster boulevards.
Westminster police Sgt. Richard Mize said Balbirnie refused to pull over, instead leading police on a chase through Huntington Beach and Westminster before pulling over in Seal Beach at the intersection of Westminster and Seal Beach Boulevard.
Mize said Balbirnie began to start his vehicle again, so officers used a bean-bag round to break the window and attempt to pull Balbirnie out of the vehicle.
"We made numerous requests and announcements for him to get out of the car, but he refused," Mize said. "He was challenging us to come in the car to get him."
Knauerhaze said officers put a police K-9 into the car to attempt to get Balbirnie out.
"Despite being bit, the suspect continued to resist by punching the police dog," Knauerhaze said. "A Taser was deployed and the suspect was taken into custody."
