Lake County sheriff defends role in near-shootout

Lake County Sheriff Frank Rivero is in trouble with the law — some of his own deputies and Clearlake police — following an inadvertent, guns-drawn showdown between the two agencies.

Lake County Sheriff Frank Rivero. Rivero failed to notify Clearlake police about an undercover operation his drug team was conducting in a home within the city last week, according to police records.

Clearlake police, told there was a hostage situation under way, banged on the door of the house with guns drawn, and when it opened, confronted the “suspects,” who turned out to be sheriff's deputies.

No one was harmed, but the police officers were shaken by the experience. The incident is the latest controversy to erupt around Rivero, who was elected sheriff after an acrimonious campaign last year.

Rivero said reactions to the drug operation and other criticisms are overblown, politically motivated and misinformed.

Clearlake Police Sgt. Rodd Joseph, in his report on the incident, said that he and three fellow city officers approached the home about 9 p.m. last Thursday. If the deputies inside had pointed their guns, “we would have likely begun firing our weapons,” he said.

This Sheriff is a problem. His whole campaign was that deputies are racist. In another article with this story he was quoted as saying "I prefer action over protocol" when asked about protocols that are in place to prevent this type of incident.

Umm, it's common sense this guy seems to be lacking. I believe there is a massive disconnect in his brain, possibly between the stem and the rest of it.
