DA: Dad justified when he shot and killed son

A Hatfield Township police lieutenant was justified when he shot and killed his son as the teenager attacked him with a knife inside the laundry room of their Towamencin home on June 8, according to the District Attorney's Office.
Risa Vetri Ferman made the decision Thursday clearing Lt. Eric B. Schmitz in the shooting death of his 17-year-old son Stephen Schmitz. In a press release Friday, Ferman said the teen had already swung a 10-inch knife at his father as the elder Schmitz retreated into the laundry room and fell to the floor. She said Steven was poised to stab Eric Schmitz again when Schmitz fired twice into his son's chest. The proximity between the two prevented Eric Schmitz from aiming elsewhere, Ferman said in the press release. Eric Schmitz tried to help his son until paramedics arrived, but the coroner pronounced Stephen dead upon arrival.
The family had been coping with Stephen's depression for at least two months prior to his death, according to the District Attorney's Office. Family members said Stephen's behavioral and mental health problems were becoming more alarming and Eric and his wife Lori Schmitz had taken steps to help him through counseling and treatment, according to police.

I feel for all of them. They say one of life's greatest tragedies is to outlive your child, but how this went down is much, much worse.

I hope dad doesn't get screwed up in the head after having done this, because it could very easily happen. Bad situation all around. The son should have known better than to mess with someone in LE, especially within his own family. But then again, depression can do some strange things.

The more I think about this the sicker I get.

My first reaction was "I'd rather let him kill me than kill my son." But then what? Either he surrenders and spends his life in the criminal justice/mental health system which I know rather well and horrifies me. Or maybe he kills his mother and any siblings and goes down "suicide by cop." Neither scenario is acceptable. As the protector of the rest of the family I'd probably do the same thing the lt did and the aftermath has to be horrible to live through. This is the worst "no win" scenario I can think of.

    Prayers for the whole family.

Absolutely. If it were just me then,,well it is what it is. However, what if it wasn't? The thought of my child not only killing me but additional people, family members as well and then maybe responding officers. It gives me chills just thinking about it.

Holy God. Prayers to all involved.
