Woman fined for throwing Wotsit

A woman has been fined £75 for throwing a crisp out of her car window.
Hilary Buckland, of Orchard Way, Luton, threw a Cheesy Wotsit into the road and was spotted by a council official who thought it was a cigarette butt.
Mrs Buckland, 46, was issued with the £75 littering fine by Luton Borough Council.
She was told that it was the council's policy to issue fines for littering and it made no difference whether she had thrown a crisp or a cigarette butt.
'Hard done by'
Mrs Buckland said one of the children in her car threw the Wotsit into her lap while she was driving in Leagrave High Street, Luton. She then threw the crisp out of the car window.
The council's Enforcement Chief Jon Maddox said: "The council has invested significantly in a cleaner Luton and my colleagues work hard to make a visible difference.
"I don't intend to let a small minority of litter louts take us a step backwards and will take action against anyone I hear of dropping litter."
Mrs Buckland said: "I'm always clearing up litter and always telling my children. I just feel so hard done by."

Now, that's harsh.

Well, I've always contended that cheetos (the american equivalent, I think) aren't biodegradable and that not even the local wildlife will touch them. Now it seems at least one government has decided they're garbage too.

seems a little steep to me... maybe fine her when they thought it was a cigarette butt, but once they found out it was a cheeto... I mean, geez. On an unrelated tangent, I really want some cheetos now.

There is a felony littering? Would that be determined by the amount or the type of litter or something else? What makes it uped to a felony? That blows my mind. A felony... whew.

Which one? Fining for improper cheeto disposal or charging a felony for littering?

I carry a book of litter tickets around with me (£50). I've never used one because most people who litter in front of me pick it up when I tell them to. Problem sorted on my person scale of right and wrong.
Anyone who dumps sufficient amounts of litter for me to want to book them is dumping enough to get a summons (felony littering it seems in NC) and so the tickets don't come out.

The council wardens don't give a warning or ask people to pick it up around my way. Police and police staff do as it's common sense to warn first.

Well, the council have no reputation to protect because they run the
parking controllers. Revenue generating is the name of the game.
That's what heppens when you take enforcement away from the police.

That's very true. I just make a personal choice to use PAWs (Persuade, Advise, Warn) before prosecuting someone, especially for what is regarded as a "minor" offence.
Oddly though, I have much less tolerance for traffic offences, probably because I have no way of ensuring they rectify a defect (no VDRS here).
Now, if someone wants to take the piss...any means at my disposal to ruinate their day come into play.

I often don't use VDRS as people take the pi$$ with it swapping number plates or going to dodgy garages who stamp the form for cash.
