Skydiver commits suicide by shedding his parachute in midair
More here: Police: Upstate NY skydiver, 60, left note, then shed chute in midair to commit suicide - The Washington PostPolice say a veteran skydiver left a suicide note before intentionally shedding his parachute in midair and falling to his death in a New York farm field.

If the guy suffered from depression, then it's tragic. If he was otherwise mentally competent to make the decision to end his life, then more power to him. Regardless, at least he did it outside so there's minimum clean up.

I knew someone that did this. About 1989 this guy was intentionally packing his gear to malfunction, like he was rehearsing. I watched a couple of his "attempts" and thought someone of his experience level should not have these equipment issues. (I also thought it was odd he had a round reserve.) About one week later we got news he bounced at another dz.
