SHREWSBURY, Mass. - State troopers tackled a suicidal man to stop him from jumping off of the I-290 bridge over Lake Quinsigamond in Shrewsbury on Wednesday morning.
At 10:03 a.m., the State Police Holden Barracks received a call from the Holden Police Department, which had a man on the phone who said he was planning on killing himself.

10-04-11, 07:57 AM #2The suicidal man must not have really wanted to kill himself if he waited for the trooper to tackle him instead of jumping as soon as he saw the troopers. The trooper did great work (at considerable personal risk) to save him.Troopers Michael Riley, Jell Gilbert and Dana Oliver all responded to the bridge near Exit 19 on I-290 westbound where they found a 39-year-old man with one leg over the railing, State Police said. He had parked his SUV on the side of the highway and was out of his vehicle when troopers arrived.
One trooper was able to get close enough to the man to tackle him and bring him back onto the bridge deck, State Police said

SI VIS PACEM PARA BELLUM-Ex-Sheriff Martin Howe to Will Kane in "High Noon"
"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."
Far from being a handicap to command, compassion is the measure of it. For unless one values the lives of his soldiers and is tormented by their ordeals , he is unfit to command.

Outstanding work by those troops. Not much better than saving a life in this business.
Some years ago, I was southbound on I-5 going to work at the Courthouse. I was on that giant bridge that spans the ship canal and is about 280 feet above the water. I saw a guy standing next to a parked car looking over the rail. I called for SPD and hit the next exit and screamed back north. I dismounted and approached the guy (but not too close) and was able to talk him back to me. About that time, SPD came zooming in, grabbed the guy, didn't say a word to me, and took off leaving me with the car to impound. It wasn't till I got out of my cruiser that I saw the rail was only 2 and one half feet tall and that this giant bridge BOUNCED about 6 inches as traffic flooded across. You just don't feel it as you drive....scared the crap out of me.
Many thanks SPD...another of the many things your famous for.

I would like my country back. I used to believe that one man could never destroy this country. Not so sure anymore!
