Solar flare may affect GPS and cell phones

On Sunday, a massive explosion on the sun known as a solar flare sent an ejection of some of the sun's plasma hurtling toward earth at the ungodly speed of 1,000 kilometers...per second!

Furthermore, our beloved GPS systems may be affected. The GPS satellites themselves, which are located high above the Earth's atmosphere, are most likely not at risk, but the earth's electromagnetic field will get all stirred up by radiation coming off the sun, and the signals we receive have to pass through that stirred-up area.

"As conditions change, GPS systems may be degraded," said Spence.

Cellphones will generally not be affected, said Douglas Biesecker, a physicist with NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center.

This is one of the few times I'd want to be somewhere cold. They say that there will be quite a light show up north with this.

Visible as far south as Illinois, or so they predicted. I didn't see them, but I tell you, there is nothing like the northern lights. Probably what I miss the most from AK.

They also predicted R3 level blackouts but I don't think it got that bad.

We had some wide spread short term cell phone issues today. Wonder if it was related?

I had issues with my cell Tuesday, mainly with texting and data. First time it's happened, so I'm blaming it on this and not getting my blood pressure up about it.

And the aurora borealis is on my bucket list.

I'm throttled to 500kbps this month anyway. This won't make it worse and the sky gets pretty, good deal.

It's unlike anything else. And seeing it this far south due to active sun storms isn't enough. You have to see it directly overhead to get the full affect.

Mine, too. Several years ago I saw a glow from it while on a redeye flight from WA but that doesn't count.

Maybe it's time for all of us to visit Xiphos!

The best I ever saw was north of the Arctic Circle, at Atigun Pass in 2008
