A man accused of holding Labrador police in a standoff for more than a day asked his friends for advice on Facebook while the confrontation was underway.

Douglas Earle, who was taken into custody in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Sunday, has been ordered to undergo a 10-day psychiatric assessment at the Waterford Hospital in St. John's.

Police say that Earle had threatened to harm himself during a 25-hour standoff at a home in the Labrador town. RCMP say Earle had failed to report to jail on Friday night, where he had been serving time on weekends.

Less than seven hours into the standoff, Earle posted a message on his Facebook profile. "Love you all …even if I don't like who you try to be," he wrote.

The Facebook page shows that friends responded with messages of concern, urging him not to harm himself and turn himself over to police.
