Detectives investigate deadly motel shooting
PLAQUEMINE, LA (WAFB) -
A tragic start to the weekend in Plaquemine. A man was shot and killed at a local motel.
It happened at the Relax Inn motel on Highway One just after 4 a.m. Friday morning. The gunman is still on the run. Francis Wunstell and some family members were celebrating the end to 15-days of work off shore. Wunstell says he fell asleep during the party, but woke to some horrific news.
"Me my girlfriend, and David, and Brian, we just partying...drinking beer, and that's all we was doing. Like I said, my girlfriend heard a knock on the door. They answered the door...pow," said Wunstell.
His nephew Brian was shot, and Iberville sheriff's deputies say it was a wound to the chest that killed him. Everyone who was in the room when the fatal shot was fired, spent the morning telling investigators just what they saw and heard.
"She heard somebody knock on the door, and they said give me your money, or something. When David opened the door, when the guy said give me your money, Brian stepped up to the front of the door, the guy shot him and took off," said Wunstell about what his girlfriend saw.
Patrick Kinser was asleep in the room next door when the shooting took place.
"I didn't hear nothing. It's just the air conditioner was on, the doors were closed, so I didn't hear anything," said Kinser.
He says he can't believe he slept through all the commotion, but he's more shocked something so violent happened in their small town.
"I don't really know a whole lot about it. I just know there was a shooting," said Kinser. "It's a shame that man got killed like that."
Shot and killed in front of family during what was supposed to be the start to a weekend of fun.

"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."
Far from being a handicap to command, compassion is the measure of it. For unless one values the lives of his soldiers and is tormented by their ordeals , he is unfit to command.
