Louisiana "Train of Hope" arrives in Newark

NEWARK —The train was from New Orleans, but the idea came from Slidell, La.

More than 5 tons of food, supplies, clothing and blankets arrived this afternoon in Newark, where a team of 70 volunteers was waiting to load the goods onto trucks and ship them off to Bayonne and Hoboken, where Hurricane Sandy flooded out whole neighborhoods and where many are still without power.

The Amtrak train -- normally called "The Crescent" but today dubbed "The Train of Hope" -- arrived at Newark Pen Station just before 1 p.m., carrying 27 pallets of diapers, canned goods, cleaning products, blankets, batteries flashlights and everything else volunteers in Slidell, many of them victims of Hurricane Katrina, could think of.

If anyone would know what is needed after a disaster of that magnitude, it would be those who have been through it and rebuilt. Kudos.
