Confetti used during Macy's Parade may have included social security #s and banking account info
New York police are investigating claims that shredded paper used as confetti during Macy’s annual Thanksgiving Day Parade included sensitive information – including Social Security numbers and banking account information
According to WPIX, one confetti strip indicates that it's from an arrest record, and other strips offer more detail. "This is really shocking," Finkelstein told the station. "It says, 'At 4:30 A.M. a pipe bomb was thrown at a house in the Kings Grant' area.

This is an inspired idea.
It should prove much cheaper to use paper than give every aspiring identity thief their own unencrypted laptop. Recycled paper at that, bonus!

Update:
Upon closer inspection, the confetti contained information from Nassau County police incident reports plus the names, social security numbers and bank account information of Nassau County police officers and employees.
Other scraps included information about Mitt Romney's motorcade to and from the October 16 presidential debate at Hofstra University in Nassau County, which borders New York City to the east on Long Island.

NEW YORK (PIX11)—
Three days after breaking the story on highly classified police documents ending up as confetti in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, PIX11 News has learned that the classified confetti came from a police employee who had attended the parade as a spectator.
Sources close to the investigation into the incident told PIX11 News that an employee of the Nassau County Police Department was watching the parade near 65th Street and Central Park West, along the parade route. He had brought shredded NCPD documents with him for his family and friends to use as confetti, and use them they did.

Also glad to see they're looking at upgrading to cross-cut shredders, too. At this rate, they might want to put the pieces in a blender with some bleach, water and laundry starch and make hand made paper out of it.
