Detroit Police Chief stops academy graduation and orders recruits back to academy

It started as a swearing in ceremony to put badly needed cops back on Detroit streets, but it turned into a swearing out ceremony when Chief Ella Bully-Cummings decided to stop the event at the very last moment.

The 25 police academy students were ordered back to class after one of the students failed a pop quiz by Chief Bully-Cummings.

According to Richard Weaver, Detroit Police Officers Association, the chief asked one of the students for her assistant chief’s job description. When the student didn’t know, Weaver said the chief was "highly upset," had their badges stripped and sent all 25 back to school.

Weaver said, "They’re begging for police officers on the street. 25 are ready to go on the street all they need is to be a sworn in after their recall and because of some officers not knowing the specific job of the assistant chief, the chief said they’ll be no swearing in, you’re back in the academy."

Weaver said the citizens are being cheated.

The 25 students are former officers who were laid off and then recalled. They went through a two week training session and will continue to train until Chief Bully-Cummings is satisfied.

The union plans to ask the chief to swear them in. The Detroit Police Department did not return calls from Action News.

What a tool. The part that gets me is these were [I]laid off cops[I]... That is bad already. Then they had to recycle the academy only to be told by their chief that the job they have already done, they don't know well enough. Wise, Chief Bully

In what way would the knowledge of the job details of the assistant chief impact the job performance of the officers? Not only that, but these guys were already cops that had been laid off. They knew their job or they wouldn't be coming back.

I think it's got more to do with the person rather than their gender. There's tons of guys who do boneheaded things on a regular basis, yet no one makes a crack about their gender playing a part in their stupidity.
