PARK OFFICERS REMOVE HANDLES FROM PUBLIC WATER FOUNTAINS

The National Park Service has actually had someone remove the handles off all the well pumps along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal that runs 184 miles from Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland, according to sources.

This is probably only slightly related to the shutdown. They generally remove the pump handles during the winter, when the Park Service can't get out and monitor water quality or to protect the pumps from freezing. They've been doing it for some 30 years or so, to my personal knowledge. We got in the habit of carrying a means to work the pump ourselves way back when I was in Boy Scouts... So I could see them taking them off early since they can't monitor the water due to the shutdown -- but they'd have been doing it anyway soon.

Where can I find water? Water pumps are located at each Hiker/Biker Campsite, roughly every 5 miles. This water is safe to drink. The pumps are tested weekly by the Park Service. If a problem is found, they will remove the pump handle. The water pumps are also shut down between mid-November and mid-April to prevent freeze damage.

I was a little hesitant in posting this since I couldn't find much else on it.

It's been going around for a couple days. There are plenty of legit examples of stupidity without jumping on things that aren't really related. They may have pulled the handles a few weeks early... but they were coming off soon anyway.
