IOWA CITY (AP) — The University of Iowa is investigating possible inappropriate activity by members of the baseball team after photos surfaced showing a group of college-age men standing naked with hats over their genitals.

Two pictures originally posted on the online student directory Facebook.com were e-mailed to the Iowa City Press-Citizen last week. The paper then forwarded the photos to Iowa athletic department officials to verify if any of the men in the pictures were Hawkeyes baseball players.

University officials “have identified at least one of them as a baseball player,” Iowa General Counsel Marcus Mills said Friday.

The caption for one picture said the men were freshman on the Hawkeyes baseball team undergoing “initiation.”

“Having learned of this Thursday night, we have immediately begun an investigation into the incident in cooperation with Jack Dahm, head (Iowa) baseball coach. This is a matter that will be taken very seriously and will be thoroughly investigated,” university President David Skorton said in a statement released Friday.

No disciplinary action has yet been taken and there is no timetable for the investigation, Mills said.
