Meter Maid arrested for refusing to void a ticket given to a police officer

Meter maid Jackie Fegan, 40, was arrested for refusing to void a ticket issued to Chicago, Illinois police officer Robert Reid on May 18. Reid had illegally parked his personal white minivan at 700 N. Michigan, claiming he was on "police business."

After seeing the ticket, Reid flagged down Fegan and insisted she tear up the ticket. Fegan refused. When she walked away across the street, she was arrested for jaywalking. She was handcuffed and taken into custody at the Near North District police station.

"They were hurting me. They wouldn't stop," Fegan told the Chicago Sun-Times. "It's unreal. One minute I'm working, and the next minute I'm being hauled off and hurt and thrown into a paddy wagon. He was very, very violent."

Fegan was not charged with any crime and was released after thirty minutes. She plans to sue the city for false arrest.

Pedro, what's a parking ticket worth? Here it's a paltry $20 traditionally, unless you parked in a handicap, or in front of a fire hydrant. Pedro, what's a parking ticket run in chicago?

The only cop I've ever heard of who arrested someone for jaywalking was Barney Fife.

Jaywalking tickets are only exciting if the cops are hiding in the bushes, geesh, doesn't he know.

It's so easy to get in trouble when one lets
their temper override their common sense.

Reminds me of a false arrest back in 1996, a
little rookie let his temper rule his logic. And
    he lost as well.

The question that has to be asked...... if he treats a fellow
employee like this.... how does he treat the general public?
    That's truly scary.

Where do police departments find people
like this in the first place?

Its all about common sense and this guys does not have it. I thought that the people with deal with are bone heads, but this guy takes the cake. It would have been easy to take the ticket to the city office and tell them that he was on "police business" and let them take care of it that way. I hope this guys gets booted.

I used to get parking tickets all the time on my UC vice car. I would file a short memo, attach the cite & send it through. never heard another word about it. I never dreamed of arresting the person who wrote me.

In our city, we had a running battle with city meter maids ONLY because they were subcontracted to private agency. These people felt they couldn't be touched or corrected and were above the police, fire and other city employees.
MANY times when we were tagged we WANTED TO either drive over them or follow them and then ticket them but they REMAINED as after thoughts. I NEVER saw one cop STUPID enough to do something like this and I am SURE they would have then been suspended or fired.
The usual process is that IF you were stupid enough to park your personal vehicle illegally THEN you paid for it BUT if it was a dept car and on business or whatever, then you turned the ticket in with a memo or explanation and the commander saw to it that it was taken care of....
We ALL have cops like him in one way or another, either young and stupid or use overkill in an attempt to impress there superiors.
Take care and be safe ALL !!

If we were in a UC car, we needed to park legally or pay the ticket ourselves, even on official business. Marked cars were never tagged and detective cars and such all have parking permits you put on the dashboard that noted you were on official business.

UC cars are supposed to be just that. It always pissed me off when I saw some dipshit park his UC car in a "police only" parking space around the precinct. Why not just paint "POLESE" the side of the damn thing. That's why we required UC car users to pay for parking. You can get reimbursed for it.

You could do like some cities around here, and get the CPA alumni volunteers and Police Explorers to write handicap parking tickets & so forth, maybe. With a new notiable exceptions (yours truly being one ) they have a great attitude. The only problem would be finding some who had time & energy, but there's lots of retirees who are egar & willing to do stuff like that.
