Red-Light Cameras Causing Unexpected Problem

DIEGO -- Red light cameras may be catching North County motorists in the act, but they are also causing a new and unexpected problem: paperwork.

The cameras are resulting in thousands of new citations with no one to take care of them.

"Normally, you have a really busy day and there's a kind of reprieve the following day," said David Yamasaki, a representative with the North County courts. "Unfortunately, they're seeing this every single day."

The court clerk said the money from red-light camera fines goes to cities that installed the cameras and the private company that maintains them. The courts do not get a share, so they can't hire more workers.
