SAN DIEGO – A thief tried to steal an ATM machine from a Clairemont gas station early Friday morning after smashing through the front glass doors of the building in a stolen car .
Police were called to the Mobil station on Balboa Avenue near Charger Boulevard just after 4 a.m. and found a Chevy El Camino jammed between the door frame, said San Diego police Sgt. Kerry Tom.

The thief had backed the car through the door and apparently couldn't get it out so he ran away, Tom said.
Officers discovered the vehicle was stolen after calling the owner, who thought it was still parked in his driveway.

The gas station was closed at the time
